Some wedding days feel almost too perfect to be real. This intimate elopement at Lago di Braies in August 2026 was one of them: a symbolic ceremony at sunrise, a private boathouse, a wooden jetty surrounded by emerald water and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites.

Make it worth the journey
For our Australian couple, who travelled 24 hours from Australia to Italy, it was the most beautiful setting in which to exchange their vows—and a morning none of us will ever forget. An intimate ceremony at one of the Dolomites’ most iconic lakes.

Lake Braies—known as Pragser Wildsee in German—is famous for its crystal-clear water, the historic wooden boathouse and breathtaking mountain scenery. During the summer months, it is also an extremely popular destination. Creating a truly private and intimate ceremony here therefore requires careful planning, an early start and a little bit of luck.

From May to October, the boathouse and jetty La Palafitta can be reserved exclusively each morning from 6:30 to 8:00 am. During this time, the couple has private access to the boathouse, the jetty and the lake’s traditional wooden rowing boats before the venue opens to the public. These exclusive sunrise slots are highly sought-after and must be booked far in advance. When reservations opened, we were ready with our fingers on the keyboard—but even then, our couple’s preferred date, 25 August, was already unavailable. Fortunately, we managed to secure the following morning instead. At the time, it felt like a compromise. In hindsight, it was an incredible stroke of luck.
Sometimes, the universe chooses the better date

On 25 August, the rain poured down all day. We arrived at our hotel and it was all cloudy, wet and sad. The following morning, however, the Dolomites welcomed us with clear blue skies and the promise of a glorious late summer day.
Our photographer Sophie, videographer Andrej and my husband and me had travelled to Lake Braies the evening before so that we could familiarise ourselves with the location and prepare every detail. When we returned before sunrise, plenty of early risers had already gathered along the shore to watch the first light appear over this extraordinary landscape.
That made us even more grateful for our private reservation. For one and a half precious hours, the boathouse, the jetty and the boats were exclusively ours. Away from the visitors on the shore, our couple could slow down, be fully present and experience their ceremony in complete intimacy.
Vows at sunrise and a boat made for two
Inside the historic boathouse and on its wooden jetty, our bride and groom exchanged their vows in a deeply personal symbolic ceremony. There was no large audience and no elaborate production—only two people choosing one another, surrounded by still water, majestic mountains and the soft light of a new day.
After the ceremony, the couple stepped into one of the traditional wooden boats for their first portraits on the lake. With the morning sun beginning to illuminate the mountains and the water almost perfectly calm, the setting felt wonderfully peaceful and cinematic.
Mornings like this
I still can´t believe how beautiful everything was about this elopement wedding in the heart of the Dolomites. So quiet, so beauitful, so intimate. The mountains mirroring in the emeral water. What else could we have asked for.
We continued the photo and video session on the jetty until the boathouse officially opened at 8:00 am. Afterwards, we moved to the lakeshore and the nearby forest, discovering several more beautiful settings for photographs among the trees and beneath the towering peaks.
By 9:00 am, we were all rather cold, thoroughly exhausted and overwhelmingly happy. The early alarm, the chilly morning air and every minute of preparation had been worth it. The resulting images captured not only the extraordinary scenery, but also the intimacy, emotion and quiet joy of the morning.
Coffee, newly weds happiness and the next mountain adventure awaits
The newlyweds celebrated with a well-earned coffee at the nearby bistro while we began our journey back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the next wedding was already waiting for us.
It was a short visit, but one that left a lasting impression. We hope it will not be long before we are able to return to this magical corner of the Dolomites and create another unforgettable ceremony at Lago di Braies.
A place that feels like coming home
For me personally, this region holds very special memories. When I was a child, my family spent holidays with my grandparents in a mountain hut in the nearby Antholz Valley. I know and love this part of South Tyrol, and returning to it as a wedding planner felt a little like coming home.
Perhaps that is part of what makes Lago di Braies so meaningful to me. Beyond its famous views, there is a sense of stillness and connection here— a feeling that some moments deserve to be experienced slowly and remembered forever.
For this Australian couple, their Dolomites elopement was the beginning of a new chapter. For us, it was a beautiful reminder of why intimate destination weddings can be so powerful: when the location, the timing and the people come together, even a change of date can turn into the greatest gift.
My special thanks go to Sophie Köstner (photographer) and Andrej Oblender (videographer). Not only that they did an amazing job on the pictures and film – they were a perfect team that morning, calm, passionated, willing to walk above and beyond to catch the couples best memory moments. Thank you Sophie and Andrej for an amazing lake morning – you make the wedding planners work so much easier.
