A „step by step“ guide for US couples

Dreaming of getting married in the Alps of Germany or Austria, in a historic castle, or beside a crystal-clear mountain lake? Europe – and especially Austria or Germany – offers some of the most breathtaking wedding backdrops in the world – but planning a wedding from the US can feel overwhelming at first. This step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to know – from legal requirements to timelines, costs, and insider tips – so you can start planning with confidence.
Step 1: Decide between a legal or symbolic ceremony or a church wedding
This is the most important decision you’ll make early on!
Option 1: legal ceremony
- Requires official paperwork and appointments at local registry offices
- there are fixed places for that; usually in the town house. It is not possible to have a legal ceremony „everywhere“.
- Can be complex for non-residents
- Often involves translators and advance documentation
- Keep in mind: you need time for this option. It´s nothing you can do under 6 months.
Option 2: symbolic ceremony
- recommended to get married in the US first (but not necessary)
- it gives you the option to ave your wedding ceremony anywhere you like in Europe
- full flexibility (mountains, lakes, castles, private venues)
- insider tipp: About 90% of my US couples choose a symbolic ceremony – it’s stress-free and allows for a much more personal experience.
Option 3: church ceremony
- you need to get married legally first – in the USA or in Germany or Austria
- find and book a church in Germany or Austria; keep in mind that there is a difference between protestant and catholic churches
- the church in Germany or Austria will let you know what papers you need
- your home parish in the US will take care of the paperwork

Step 2: Choose the perfect location
Germany and Austria offer incredible variety in wedding locations and venues, depending on your vision:
- Bavarian Alps – dramatic mountain views, cozy luxury lodges
- Austrian Alps – elegant, scenic, slightly more exclusive feel
- Castle venues – fairytale atmosphere, perfect for classic weddings with a touch of history
- Lakeside locations – romantic, relaxed, stunning reflections
💡 Think about:
- Travel logistics for your guests
- accommodation
- Nearest international airport
- Season and weather

Step 3: Set your wedding time line (very important)
Planning from abroad requires more lead time than a local wedding.
Recommended timeline:
- 12 – 18 months before: choose planner + secure venue
- 9 – 12 months: book key vendors (photographer, florist, etc.)
- 6 months: finalize design & details
- 2–3 months: confirm timeline, travel, logistics
💡 The best venues in the Alps are often booked 1–2 years in advance. If you are planning on short notice, we highly recommend to book a planner who knows the hidden gems.

Step 4: Understand the budget
A destination wedding in Germany or Austria can be surprisingly flexible in terms of budget. Especially in comparison to Italy weddings.
General ranges:
- Elopements / small weddings: €8,000 – €20,000
- Mid-size weddings (30–60 guests): €25,000 – €60,000
- Luxury weddings: €60,000+
💡 Good to know:
Compared to the US, you often get higher quality and more unique venues for your budget.

Step 5: Work with an experienced local wedding planner
Planning from another continent comes with challenges:
- Language barriers and another (wedding) culture
- Different vendor structures
- Legal requirements
- Time zone differences
- travel challenges
An experienced local planner helps you:
- Find trusted vendors
- Communicate smoothly
- Navigate legal and cultural differences
- Design a wedding that truly reflects your vision
💡 This is where most couples feel the biggest relief.

Step 6: Plan travels and guest experience
Destination weddings are about more than just the wedding day. A sentence we often hear from our couples is „we want to make it worth the journey for our family and friends“.
Think about:
- Accommodation options (close together if possible and – if you are not going to take over cost – in different price ranges)
- Welcome dinner or casual gathering
- Transportation (especially in mountain areas)
- Activities for guests (hiking, spa, sightseeing)
💡 Your wedding becomes a full experience, not just a single day.

Step 7: Design your wedding experience!
Now comes the fun part.
Germany and Austria are perfect for:
- Elegant, nature-inspired weddings
- Intimate mountain elopements
- Luxury destination celebrations
- Romantic, timeless aesthetics
💡 Focus on:
- Atmosphere over perfection
- Experience over tradition

Final thoughts
Planning a luxury destination wedding in Europe might feel like a big step – but with the right guidance, it becomes an unforgettable experience. The Alps, historic venues, and the slower pace of European weddings create something truly special.
